What to Remember When Waking

In that first hardly noticed moment in which you wake,
coming back to this life from the other
more secret, moveable and frighteningly honest world
where everything began,
there is a small opening into the new day
which closes the moment you begin your plans.

What you can plan is too small for you to live.
What you can live wholeheartedly will make plans enough
for the vitality hidden in your sleep.

To be human is to become visible
while carrying what is hidden as a gift to others.
To remember the other world in this world
is to live in your true inheritance.

You are not a troubled guest on this earth,
you are not an accident amidst other accidents
you were invited from another and greater night
than the one from which you have just emerged.

Now, looking through the slanting light of the morning window
toward the mountain presence of everything that can be
what urgency calls you to your one love?
What shape waits in the seed of you
to grow and spread its branches
against a future sky?

Is it waiting in the fertile sea?
In the trees beyond the house?
In the life you can imagine for yourself?
In the open and lovely white page on the writing desk?

  2. I cannot express what this series has meant for me. Last weekend I went on a retreat and went through From Wholeness. It shouldn’t surprise me that some of the places I feel stuck in the homeschool journey mirror some of the places I feel stuck within myself. This helped me to release and move into planning the year in a more gentle way. I found your blog less than a month ago and read your “about”. You had me at Enneagram, but when I saw how much John O’Donohue you put in your series, I was hooked. I hope Taproot was light-filled for you and everyone attending. Thank you for writing.

  3. I laughed out loud twice when I read your first msg. Let me explain. I am not a 4, I assume you are saying you are. I AM NOT AT ALL SURPRISED that you are a 4. My husband of 13 yrs is a 4, and I laughed because with all of the frustrations I have had with him being a 4…I keep meeting and becoming friends with 4s. LOL!!! I am a 6, but think my soul # is a 9. Not sure if you agree with or have heard of that theory of the soul #. I know you are what you are throughout life. This theory recognizes that our family of origin can cause us to create mechanisms to live out of another number. 9s tend to live out as 6s.
I would love to hear more about your journey into spiritual direction with homeschooling. I will say I have been considering going back to spiritual direction for 2-3 months now, but directors I have seen or even yours (I looked her up after I found your blog) haven’t created a feeling of yes in me.

    • Guilty as charged. Yes I am a 4. And bless you people who marry 4s. LOL

I have not heard of the soul #. I wonder if it is another interpretation of outward behavior vs internal motivation. Whose work is it? I have been reading Sandra Maitri lately. My mom is a big fan of Richard Rohr. Fascinating stuff this enneagram.

Yes, the spiritual director relationship needs to be a big “yes!” – wishing you an opening there.

I am still in the very early thinking/planning stages of how spiritual direction with homeschooling could work. Lots of ideas percolating. My thinking has revolved around a few people asking me if I would do homeschool consulting with them and honestly, that is not my strength or my passion. However, being in relationship with someone who really wants to explore where personal inner work and the nitty gritty of homeschooling intersect – yeah, that’s where I want to be. I’m excited to see how this will manifest, both online and also in person. Any thoughts as someone who has been in SD and also home schools? And while I’m peppering you with questions, can I ask you how you describe SD? I have done it for 3 years and I still don’t know how to succinctly tell people what the heck happens both in session and long term.

Wanna get a cup of coffee sometime? LOL
      Glad you’re here.
Hope you are having a great weekend.

  4. My husband has a Sandra Maitri book, but we started the first several years with Rohr. I would love to share some of my thoughts and experiences with spiritual directions. Can you see my email since I signed up to follow? I don’t know how that all works. Could you shoot me an email and I can send some of my thoughts off the blog space?
