Happy New Year

IMG_7356

Above the mountains
the geese turn into
the light again

Painting their
black silhouettes
on an open sky.

Sometimes everything
has to be
inscribed across
the heavens

so you can find
the one line
already written
inside you.

Sometimes it takes
a great sky
to find that

first, bright
and indescribable
wedge of freedom
in your own heart.

Sometimes with
the bones of the black
sticks left when the fire
has gone out

someone has written
something new
in the ashes of your life.

You are not leaving.
Even as the light fades quickly now,
you are arriving.

  1. as always, it was a pleasure to read your message this morning. as I look to the sky on this chilly, grey day I can’t help but feel optimistic and excited about what the next twelve months may bring. happy 2015!

  2. Beautiful! I’m so grateful to you for introducing me to David Whyte and many other inspiring authors. You (and they) have enriched my life beyond words!

  3. Shiela, I love reading the calm, quiet, zen-like poems and prayers you post. I aspire to know such a calm mood in my life but somehow I’m lacking. Mine is something more like this….

One of my New Year’s resolutions is creating a rhythm, which I know you’re all about. I want to believe that it will help reduce the utter chaos in my house, at least a little bit!! I don’t even know where to begin! Can you point me to a book, or an article, or a wizard who might be able to help me in this area!? :-) Thanks, and keep up the amazing work. It means something.

  4. …I just read the “Getting Started: Rhythm” post that was featured on the side bar that I hadn’t noticed before. THANK YOU! That is a good start for me, and actually seems somewhat attainable, even with my little monster in tow!! Thanks again!!
