Sunday Selections

IMG_7364

Think in ways you’ve never thought before
If the phone rings, think of it as carrying a message
Larger than anything you’ve ever heard,
Vaster than a hundred lines of Yeats.

Think that someone may bring a bear to your door,
Maybe wounded and deranged: or think that a moose
Has risen out of the lake, and he’s carrying on his antlers
A child of your own whom you’ve never seen.

When someone knocks on the door, think that he’s about
To give you something large: tell you you’re forgiven,
Or that it’s not necessary to work all the time, or that it’s
Been decided that if you lie down no one will die.

– Robert Bly, “Things to Think”

  1. Let us be amazed! I was just reading yesterday that Steiner said we want to live as if the sun may not rise tomorrow, that we actually have to believe that! I hope someone comes to my door to tell me “it’s not necessary to work all the time” and that “if I lie down no on will die.” I think someone just did!

    • I am not a huge Robert Bly fan, but this poem always stops me in my tracks. I cut it out of an Oprah magazine probably before Vincent was born, lol.

I think we do need to hear those admonitions. Let’s not be so hard on ourselves. If only for today.

      xxoo to you.
